Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Accounts
People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
