No fewer than 13 individuals killed and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its duties in public projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
